The Problem
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, patients have been faced with considerably longer waiting times for appointments and subsequent diagnoses and treatment. This has introduced further pressure to the already stretched specialism of Ultrasound.
Ultrasound plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis of various conditions including pancreatic cancer, cirrhosis and kidney stones. At present, Ultrasound is recognised as a shortage specialty by the UK Government Migrations Advisory Committee. In August 2020, NHS England reported that the specialty with the largest waiting list was Non-obstetric Ultrasound, accounting for 405,800 patients. This makes up 32.7% of the total waiting list.
The Solution
.
Since October 2021, MediServices Healthcare has been supporting the Ultrasound service at Walsall Manor Hospital
MediServices Healthcare has been able to increase capacity through collaborative efforts which include working closely alongside in-house clinical staff and supplying experienced external sonographers. Our efforts have allowed for a significant increase in capacity, with sonographers seeing up to 20 patients per clinic.
The work by MediServices Healthcare is closely aligned with the objectives set out by NHS England’s plan to tackle the COVID-19 backlog for elective care. This plan, released in February 2022 stipulates that by March 2025, 95% of patients needing a diagnostic test will receive it within six weeks. These ambitious targets are expected to be achieved through strengthened relationships with independent sector providers, to aid and accelerate recovery.
Another appointment today for ultrasound. The technician was absolutely brilliant!!
His name was Bart and he kept me laughing through the whole process, he was courteous, efficient, very friendly, and treated me with dignity & respect. Well done!! We need more like him. I sit on the Patients Relations Team as a volunteer, so I always take notice of how staff help to support patients.
