What is a Testes Ultrasound test?

A testes ultrasound, also known as a testicular or scrotal ultrasound, is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of the testicles and surrounding tissues in the scrotum.

This scan is commonly used to investigate:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Lumps or changes in the testicles

It is quick, safe and does not involve radiation.

Preparation for the Scan

  • Please wash the area to be scanned before your appointment.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing to allow easy access to the scrotal area.
  • Due to the intimate nature of the scan, a chaperone may be present. You may also request one if you wish.

Children

  • Children are not permitted in the scan room.
  • Please arrange childcare or bring a responsible adult to supervise them in the waiting area.

During the Scan

Arrival

  • Please arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
  • If you arrive more than 10 minutes late, you may be asked to rebook.

Procedure

  • You will be asked to lie on an examination couch.
  • A warm, water-based ultrasound gel will be applied to the scrotal area.
  • The sonographer will gently move a small transducer over the area to capture images.
  • You may be asked to move your penis out of the way to allow better access.
  • The room may be dimly lit to help the sonographer view the screen clearly.

Duration

  • The scan typically takes 5- 10 minutes.

After the Scan

Post-Procedure

  • You can resume your normal activities straight away.
  • The gel can be wiped off using the paper towels provided.

Results

  • Your images will be reviewed and a report will be sent to your referring doctor.
  • Please do not ask the sonographer for your results — your GP will discuss them with you.
  • We recommend contacting your GP surgery in one week to follow up.

Safety

Ultrasound is a very safe and well-tolerated procedure:

  • It does not involve radiation
  • There are no known side effects
