What is a Pelvic Ultrasound?

A pelvic ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the organs and structures in your pelvis. It is commonly used to examine the uterus and ovaries.

The test typically involves two parts:

  • Transabdominal ultrasound – scan over the lower abdomen
  • Transvaginal ultrasound – internal scan using a small probe

Your sonographer will discuss both scan types with you during your appointment. You can choose not to have the transvaginal scan if you prefer.

If you would prefer not to be scanned by a male, please let us know in advance — see contact information at the end of this leaflet.

Children

Children are not allowed in the scan room. If childcare is not possible, please bring a responsible adult to supervise them in the waiting area.

Types of Pelvic Ultrasound

Transabdominal Ultrasound

  • A small transducer is moved gently over your lower abdomen.

Transvaginal Ultrasound (for women)

  • A small transducer is gently inserted into the vagina for a closer view of the pelvic organs.
  • This scan is optional and always explained fully beforehand.

Preparation for the Scan

Transabdominal Scan

  • Drink 1 litre of water 1 hour before your appointment.
  • Arrive with a full bladder.

Transvaginal Scan (for women)

  • You may be asked to empty your bladder before the scan.

During the Scan

  • You will be asked to lie down on a couch.

For transabdominal scans:

  • A warm gel is applied to your lower abdomen
  • The sonographer will move the transducer over your skin

For transvaginal scans:

  • You will be asked to undress from the waist down and cover yourself with a sheet
  • The sonographer will explain everything beforehand
  • You may request a chaperone at any time

The room may be dimly lit to allow the sonographer to see the images clearly on the screen.

What to Expect

  • The scan usually takes 10–15 minutes
  • You may feel light pressure or mild discomfort, but it should not be painful
  • You can ask to stop the scan at any time

After the Scan

Post-Procedure

  • You can return to your normal activities immediately

Results

  • The images will be reviewed and a report sent to your referring doctor
  • Please do not ask the sonographer for your results
  • Contact your GP after 7 days to follow up on your results
