What is a Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound?
A musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of:
- Muscles
- Tendons
- Ligaments
- Joints
- Lumps and soft tissue areas
It helps diagnose a variety of conditions, including soft tissue injuries, inflammation, fluid collections, and other musculoskeletal disorders.
Preparation for the Scan
- Wear loose-fitting clothing so the area to be scanned is easy to access.
- You may be asked to remove certain clothing items during the scan.
- Take your regular medications unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Children
- Children are not permitted in the scan room.
- If needed, please bring someone to supervise them in the waiting area.
During the Scan
Arrival
- Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and check in at reception.
- If you arrive more than 10 minutes late, you may need to rebook.
Procedure
- You may be asked to sit or lie down , depending on the body part being scanned.
- The sonographer will apply a clear water-based gel to your skin.
- A small handheld device (transducer) will be moved over the area to capture images.
- The room may be dimmed to allow the sonographer to see the images clearly.
- You may be asked to move or stretch the area being scanned.
Duration
- The scan usually takes 5 – 10 minutes.
After the Scan
Post-Procedure
- You can return to normal activities straight away.
- The gel can be wiped off using paper towels provided.
Results
- The sonographer will review the images and send the report to your referring doctor.
- Please do not ask the sonographer for your results.
- Contact your GP in 7 days to follow up on your scan results.
