What Is an EMG?
An EMG is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity produced by muscles. It is often paired with NCS, which assesses how well and how fast nerves send electrical signals to the muscles.
Together, these tests help clinicians locate and understand the source of nerve or muscle dysfunction.
When Are EMG and NCS Used?
These tests are commonly used to investigate:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Nerve root injuries (e.g. sciatica)
- Motor neurone disease
- Muscle disorders such as myopathy or myositis
- Entrapment or compression syndromes
They are also used to assess the severity of damage and support treatment planning.
