A Sleep-Deprived EEG is a type of electroencephalogram performed after a period of reduced sleep. This approach increases the likelihood of capturing abnormal brain activity that may not appear during a routine EEG, making it particularly valuable in diagnosing conditions such as epilepsy, nocturnal seizures or unexplained blackouts.
At MediServices, we deliver high-quality Sleep-Deprived EEGs through both insourced clinics and fully managed outsourced diagnostic services, helping NHS teams and independent hospitals reach a diagnosis faster, reduce delays and improve patient outcomes.
What Is a Sleep-Deprived EEG?
A Sleep-Deprived EEG works in the same way as a standard EEG; recording the brain’s electrical activity using scalp electrodes but it is conducted after the patient has had less sleep than usual, typically fewer than 4 – 5 hours the night before.
Sleep deprivation makes the brain more susceptible to showing unusual electrical patterns, which increases the test’s sensitivity and usefulness.
When Is a Sleep-Deprived EEG Used?
Sleep-Deprived EEGs are often used to investigate:
- Suspected epilepsy or seizures, especially when routine EEGs have been inconclusive
- Blackouts, collapses or episodes that occur during sleep
- Nocturnal events, such as jerking, confusion or incontinence
- Unexplained daytime symptoms, where brain activity during drowsiness may reveal abnormalities
How We Deliver Sleep-Deprived EEG Services
MediServices provides Sleep-Deprived EEGs through two delivery models:
Insourced EEG Services
- Our clinicians attend your site and deliver testing within your facilities
- You provide the space. We provide clinicians, equipment, administrative support and full clinical governance
Outsourced EEG Services
- We manage the full diagnostic journey. Including patient booking, preparation instructions, clinical delivery and reporting
- Ideal for Trusts requiring low-touch, end-to-end support
All services are CQC-registered, fully governed and aligned to NHS best practice.
Patient-Centred Care
We know that patients undergoing a Sleep-Deprived EEG may feel more vulnerable due to tiredness. Our teams ensure a calm, professional environment where patients feel safe and supported.
Sleep-Deprived EEGs are:
- Non-invasive and pain-free
- Performed in a quiet, low-stimulation space
- Typically completed within 60–90 minutes
We provide clear preparation guidance and follow-up instructions as standard.
