An Ambulatory EEG is a longer-term brain activity recording that allows patients to go about their normal daily activities while wearing a portable EEG device. Also known as a 24-hour EEG, it is particularly useful for capturing infrequent, unpredictable or sleep-related neurological symptoms that might not appear during a standard EEG.
At MediServices, we offer Ambulatory EEG services across the UK through flexible insourced and outsourced delivery models, supporting NHS Trusts and independent hospitals in making confident, informed diagnoses while enhancing patient experience and access.
What Is an Ambulatory EEG?
An Ambulatory EEG works in the same way as a standard EEG; using scalp electrodes to record electrical brain activity. But instead of lasting 30 – 60 minutes, it records continuously over 24 to 72 hours.
Patients wear a small, portable device while at home and are asked to keep a diary of symptoms and activities, allowing the clinical team to correlate any events with the EEG data.
When Is an Ambulatory EEG Used?
Ambulatory EEGs are often requested for:
- Infrequent seizures or blackouts that haven’t been captured during routine EEGs
- Suspected nocturnal epilepsy or sleep-related events
- Monitoring known seizure disorders
- Assessing response to medication
- Clarifying non-epileptic events (e.g. fainting, panic attacks)
