What Is Video Telemetry?

Video Telemetry is a test that records your brain activity (EEG) and a video of your body at the same time. It helps doctors understand what happens during your symptoms, such as seizures or blackouts, by comparing what they see on the video with what your brain is doing at the time.

The test is painless and safe.

What Happens During the Test?

  • You’ll stay in a special monitoring room, usually for a few days
  • Small sensors (electrodes) will be placed on your scalp to record brain activity
  • A video camera records your movements and behaviour while you’re resting, sleeping or experiencing symptoms
  • Our team will be nearby, observing from another room and available if you need anything

The aim is to capture one or more episodes while you’re being monitored.

How to Prepare

  • Bring comfortable clothes, books and things to occupy you
  • You may be asked to adjust your medication before the test, but your doctor will guide you
  • Avoid hair products before your appointment
  • You’ll be told exactly how many days to expect (usually 2 to 5)

We’ll provide a full guide ahead of your appointment, and a member of our team will answer any questions you may have.

After the Test

  • The electrodes are removed, and you can go home
  • A consultant neurophysiologist will review your EEG and video
  • A full report is sent to your referring doctor
  • Your doctor will then explain the results and next steps
