What Is an Non-Obstetric Ultrasound (NOUS) Scan?
An Non-Obstetric Ultrasound (NOUS) scan is a safe and painless test that helps doctors take pictures of the inside of your body using sound waves. It is commonly used to check your organs, tissues and blood flow without using any radiation.
Non-Obstetric Ultrasound (NOUS) can help investigate symptoms like:
- Pain or bloating in your tummy
- Urinary symptoms
- Lumps or swelling
- Muscle, joint or tendon pain
- Menstrual changes or testicular concerns
What Happens During the Scan?
- You’ll be asked to lie down or sit, depending on the area being scanned
- A small amount of gel will be applied to your skin (this may feel cool)
- The sonographer will gently move a handheld device (called a probe) over the area
- The whole appointment takes around 15 to 30 minutes.
Non-Obstetric Ultrasound (NOUS) is non-invasive. You may feel light pressure from the probe, but it shouldn’t be uncomfortable.
