Problem
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, patients have been faced with considerably longer waiting times for appointments and subsequent diagnoses and treatment. This has introduced further pressure to the already stretched specialism of Ultrasound.
Ultrasound plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis of various conditions including: pancreatic cancer, cirrhosis and kidney stones. At present, Ultrasound is recognised as a shortage specialty by the UK Government Migrations Advisory Committee. In August 2020, NHS England reported that the specialism with the largest waiting list was Non-obstetric Ultrasound, accounting for 405,800 patients; which makes up 32.7% of the total waiting list.
The Solution
MediServices have worked hard to fill this gap by (1) providing expert-led, in-house training to develop a pool of readily available physiologists and (2) sourcing experienced, external, neurophysiologists.
Our service is inclusive of all neurophysiological equipment, consumables, and includes a full clinical report. Initially, our IONM service started out at Salford Royal Hospital, our success has enabled us to launch the service nationwide covering a wide range of hospitals including: University of Wales Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.
Through providing our intraoperative neuromonitoring services, not only have we been able to ensure that patients access treatment faster, but we also ensure that it is safer. Research has shown that neuromonitoring can reduce the risk of neurological deficit by 49%. At MediServices Healthcare, we are committed to putting patients first. We are constantly working with local teams to develop innovative solutions which help to achieve the best clinical outcomes.
SRFT have been working with MediServices for a number of years.
SRFT is one of the largest neurosciences centres in the country, and has a significant and growing need for neurophysiological services including IOM and EMG. We have found MediServices to be consistently professional, flexible and responsive to our service need over this period and would have no reservation in recommending their services to other providers.
